Project Self-Sufficiency in Newton is seeking food and monetary donations to provide Thanksgiving dinners to over 500 low-income families. The nonprofit organization is inviting individuals, businesses, and community groups to contribute traditional Thanksgiving food items or funds to help purchase meals for those in need.
Donors can sponsor a family for $50 or make a contribution of any amount. The organization is particularly in need of monetary donations to distribute complete Thanksgiving dinners to approximately 500 families. "Requests for assistance are pouring in every day, and we expect to serve more than 500 families this year," said Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency.
The organization requests donations of pumpkin or apple pies, canned vegetables, yams, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, gravy, stuffing, and mashed potato mixes. Contributions, or notification of plans to donate, are requested by Friday, November 13, to allow sufficient time to organize, package, and distribute the food.
Frozen turkeys will be accepted on Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19. Donors planning to contribute frozen turkeys are asked to notify the organization in advance due to limited refrigerated storage space. Donations can be dropped off at Project Self-Sufficiency, located at 127 Mill Street in Newton.
Individuals and families needing assistance with Thanksgiving meals are encouraged to contact the organization. For more information, to arrange a donation, or to request assistance, call 973-940-3500 or visit projectselfsufficiency.org.
